Here in America it is completely up to you if you want to purchase health insurance, today our population is close to 300million people living in america approx. 43million choose to go with no insurance. In other words a great majority of citizens currently have health insurance. Lots of ways to get coverage at little or no cost, first it depends on your income- contact social security in your state to find local plans. Many Doctors also donate time at free clinics throughout the country, make sure you get your kids checked up regularily and flu shots. The lack of prevenatitive care is the number one reason for adolescent death, so please make sure your kids are covered. Here in California we have so many ways to secure free health insurance social services provides MedICal, for folks that make middle income a program called Healthy Family is available, and for those who are in high income I would suggest buying at the very least a High Deductible plan that would give you RX and a full physical one time a year, and negotiated rates if your children need to go into the doctor these plans range from 30-50.00 per month per child (not expensive at all) and most will cover them to 5 or 6million dollars if god forbid they end up going to the hospital for a big surgery.
While in college back in 1984 one of my class-mates was going to a New Years Party in Newport Beach, it was approx. 9pm when a BMW ran the red light and t-boned the car she was in, the two girls driving a hyundai were thrown from the car- my friend did not have health insurance, her parents sold the family home pulled money from retirement because she injured so badly. "Of course the guy who hit her, had no auto insurance- and the new bmw he was driving was a friends". The sad part of the whole thing was back then the premiums for health insurance were 24.00 per month, i know cause I went out the next day and bought one, and have had one ever since. After graduating from USC, I started working for a large health insurance co. and today have owned a health insurance brokerage since 1991, look here is the truth- we live in a country that has a system in place that having health insurance is a necessity (I have the cheapest type HSA high deductible plan personally) so please make sure your family has something in place.

It is true. He is also removing your employer's tax incentive to give you health insurance. They are estimating that 20,000,000 Americans will lose their health insurance. Other aspects of the plan is that if your employer eliminates health insurance, he is expected to give you the full value of your former policy as a raise. (Right). Then you take that and the $5K and go looking for an individual policy with better benefits, lower premiums, and lower copays than the group plan you lost. (Right) To top it all off, he wants to allow companies to sell policies across state lines, which is not currently permitted. Unfortunately the only thing guaranteeing that policies cover certain things (like pregnancy, mental health), etc, is state regulation. People who are young and healthy will end up with a good deal. People who are older or who have pre-existing conditions may not be able to get insurance at any price. Eventually everybody gets sick, and they'll be able to cancel your insurance then anyway. Lousy policy, but great if you're an insurance company.

Ask yourself "Where will I get the money if ......?" If your budget really is tight, get a high deductible plan and pay for the small routine stuff out of your own pocket.
If one child has a serious illness, do you have enough friends to help you pay the bills?
Be aware that Ameriplan is a DISCOUNT plan NOT INSURANCE. If you need care, you get a discount off the price of the service ... but you could still face a very large bill. Insurance is meant to cover major expenses that you could not afford on your own.

THIS IS DIFFICULT QUESTION. I WOULD NOT ADVISE IT FOR TOO LONG. YOU COULD GO TO THE COUNTY HOSPITAL BUT THERE IS SLOW AND NOT THE BEST WITHOUT INSURANCE. I HAVE BEEN THERE MY SELF AND THE PEDIATRICIAN I SAW FOR MY CHILDREN WOULD GIVE US A BREAK AND GIVE US SAMPLES IF THEY HAD WHAT WAS NEEDED AT THE TIME. YOU CAN;T ALWAYS COUNT ON THAT.. I WAS ALSO LUCKY TO HAVE HAD NO CATASTROPHIES DURING THE TIME I HAD NO INSURANCE.
IT BOILS DOWN TO HOW YOU CAN AFFORD IT. I WOULD START AT THE COUNTY HOSPITAL AND TALK TO THE SOCIAL WORKER AND SEE IF THEY CAN POINT YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECT FOR YOUR INCOME. I WISH YOU WELL AND PRAY THAT YOU CAN GET THRU THIS TRIAL OF LIFE.

You have to have health benefits. If you can't afford it for the adults, get it for the kids, through your state CHIPS program (search "state childrens health insurance program" and put your state name in there).
Uninsured medical costs are the #1 reason for personal bankruptcy in the US.

Health benefits for yourself should be a yes/no consideration. You can probably forego it if you are young and healthy.
If you have a family.....you shouldn't even be debating this.
YES.....get the benefits.

Definitely a must!!! You never know what can happen. One little trip to the ER will set you back a couple thousand dollars.
