On the GI's in Iraq, I see the flip down scope or viewer on their helmets. Is that a night viewer - if not - what is it? If you know something about it, tell me more - and, if you know, comparisons to that 1960's technology.

The starlight scope magnified ambient visible light. This is third-generation infrared technology. It can work in total darkness, where the starlight needed at least a little faint light to work. These night vision goggles are nice by comparison.

The flippy thing is what the military calls a "Rhino Mount." It holds night vision devices.
