I completely agree with the person that said 6 weeks is too young to take a chihuahua from the mother...10 weeks would be much better for the pup so he learns proper behaviors. You also have to worry about low blood sugars in a pup this young and small. Always have Nutrical on hand just in case. I use potty pads with my chi and he's always used them perfectly well. Don't feed your pup soft food...it's terrible for their teeth. Try a holistic puppy food like Innova. Spay her by 6 months or she may come into her first heat. Chihuahua's are a really delicate breed of dog and you really need to know your stuff...I recommend buying a puppy book that is specifically about chihuahuas. Good luck!
EDIT: I live in Canada as well, and you can get all the brand names mentioned. I feed mine Innova Evo. http://www.naturapet.com

Some small dogs do quite well with a litter box, but with mine I use puppy pads. Not the normal puppy pads you buy in a pet store, but crib pads like you put in a baby's bed. The flat kind. Of course you can use them over and over again. My pups start going on them at about 3 weeks so they do work. I buy the nylabones for the puppy's teething. Beware of Greenies, rawhides, etc. Too much chance of choking. Caesar's canned food is not good. They need to be on a good quality dry puppy food. She should be spayed around 5-6 months.
I raise chihuahuas. If you have any more questions I would be happy to help you. You can click on my profile and send me an email.

A puppy should be fed by her mother and than weaned over to a good quality puppy food or all life stages food (Innova Evo) BUT you should not be getting a puppy that is younger than 8 weeks unless you own the mother, or the mother died.... if it's a legitimate breed they wouldn't sell them that early. Seriously reconsider buying a dog from anyone who's willing to sell one that young.
Potty training...crate train and teach dog to go outside..forget pads or going in the house.
She should be spayed around 6 months.
And another recommendation...don't get a new dog around the holidays...people's lives are very hectic, they're often out alot of entertaining people and this is a big change being adopted for the pup and even more chaotic with the hecticness of holiday celebration...best to wait til things settle down like in mid-January.

I think Jess explained things extremely well. I belong to a chihuahua group and have learned so much. I also recommend reading Chihuahua for Dummies before you get your chi. Also 6 weeks is way too young to be seperated from mom and siblings, in some states thats illegal, I would REALLY check out the breeder if they are letting you take your pup that early, no decent breeder would do that. I know they are cute at such a yound age, but they are cute at any age, and you are setting yourself up for alot of possible health issues if taken from mom that young. Also a harness is a must...NOT a collar, chi's are prone to collapsing tracheas due to collars. And yes, the best food possible for your pup, I feed my chi Innova. I am glad your asking questions BEFORE you get your pup. These little guys/girls are the most loving and sweetest dogs. One other important thing, I know they are sooo cute, but you MUST not let that interfer with training them and letting them get away with things or else you'll have a nasty, bossy chi. ( the kind that people think of when you say chihuahua.) If trained properly they are wonderful little dogs!! Congrats and enjoy.

Congrats!!! I got my first chihuahua on Dec. 26 05 He was only 4 weeks old at the time and he was the runt. I used peepee pads and kept him in a box beside my bed Be prepared It's like having a little baby.I don't think I had a full nights sleep for at least a month. I bought him puppy formula to drink for the first few weeks and fed him pedigree puppy food.Offer it the puppy often If they don't eat very often their sugar levels will plument I had to use a little syringe to kind of help him along for the first week or too and don't let it sleep all day or you will be up all night Just like with a little baby. Now as far as teething My babies love ropes and a sock with a knot tied in it. Good luck Buy lots of pee pads and Have her a blanket that will be hers Oh yeah you can make a rice sock take an old sock pour dry reg. rice in it tie off the end an pop it in the microwave for 25 secs or so and it makes a great heating pad makes them feel like they are next to one of thier littler mates (helps wth the crying) Make sure it's not to hot and put in under one layer of the blanket so it dosen't chew on it.. GOOD LUCK Hope this helps...

Puppy Pads are better and you can get her a chew toy or some stores sell special types of bones that are also healthy for puppies teeth. You might want to give her dry puppy food for a whille until she grows some suggestions on the type of food are Purina for puppies and Pedigree. That what I gave my dogs when they were puppies. And you can get her spayed by the age of six or seven months I belive

I own a chihuahua myself and their beautiful animals :) Good choice.
I used a litter box to start my puppy on training.
Give her puppy food, adult food might give her an upset stomach.
I would ask your vet about the last question because I don't want to give you the wrong answer on something that important.
Good Luck with your new puppy!

puppy pads
give her a chew toy recommended for dogs
always give a puppy a good type of puppy food never adult dog food.
Get her spayed as soon as vet says she is able. The earlier the better for the puppy.

You should use puppy pads, but don't get discouraged because she will have accidents. I recommend puppy food until she gets about 6 months, and you can get her spayed at 6 months. Good luck!!
