Contact the bureaus immediately and dispute the information. They will investigate it. The investigations take up to 30 days, so you do not want to delay contacting them. You will want your report corrected before you try and apply for any credit and before your insurance premiums rise. (Yes, your premiums can raise, because the insurance companies use your credit score to determine them. There are links between your credit score and how likely you are to submit a claim.)

Hate to say it but you're screwed. Credit Reporting Agencies thrive on low credit scores. They are in bed with business to make sure that you are charged high interest rates so they get the kickbacks. Youmay have an 800 score but you're going to get a loan at the rate of someone with a 600 score. As far as fighting it, it is going to take years. You can prove it isn't you all you want. It isn't going to matter. It's on your report and you're stuck. Lawyers take a lot of time and money so if you want to go that route it's up to you. You might want to take the CRA's to small claims court. Google FCRA and FDCRA and start researching. Good luck!
