In the mid-80's when TV stations started broadcasting 24 hours a day, and it was unique to the BBC.
I have no idea about cinema

Radio 4 still does after the last shipping forecast just before 1am.
BBC1 did so at the end of programmes until about 1997 when it switched from closedown to News 24 throughout the night.
Sorry but I can't help about when cinemas stopped playing it as it was before my time!

It stills plays when certain BBC radio stations close. So, never.

It used to annoy me. They decided that was "it" for the night.. and i was left wanting to watch some tv, but knowing that was it for the night on BBC.
