Wow, if you guys can afford lobster ... I'd suggest providing all guests with goofy plastic bibs (and wearing them yourselves). Also you might want to give guests a choice between lobser and a vegetarian meal, in case of allergies and whatnot. They can give you their preference when they RSVP.

My first reaction is to say NO!, since it is way to messy for a formal occasion. Yet, it is ultimately up to your guests to decide between lobster and something else. So if they choose the meal and make a mess of themselves, then that's their own doing (unless of course, you are squeezing a lot of people into tables and lobster mess can get onto non-lobster eaters).
Anyway, if you want to offer a ritzy dish that is not messy, most people would opt for a filet mignon over the lobster anyway.

I'd suggest lobster tails. It does cut down on the mess. Your guests may have concerns about messing up their good clothes and a pile of wet claws and shells on each table is kind of a drag. Like the other poster said, offer an alternative for those with seafood allergies.

Really formal wedding? Probably not the best idea. You could go with lobster rolls or scallops or clam chowder. (I used to live in ova Scotia and I knoiw where you`re coming from.)
Less formal? You COULD do the lobster but remember that some people have never eaten it and they may be embarassed or - as has been suggested - allergic. I`d have some options just in case. Then have fun!

Lobster tail can be done in a way that won't be messy for guests...your caterer will be able to do anything you ask.

i would think twice with all the cracking and splashing and such especially if it is a formal wedding. also, you would definitely need another option other than lobster for those that cannot or do not eat it. you could have it for your rehersal dinner

No!!!! What are you, high? Lobster is high in cholesetrol and extremely unhealthy for you. They are bottom-feeders. The lowest rung on the animal food chain. They eat crap, and consequently they look like crap. And this is what you expect your guests to eat? If you served that to me I would take my gift back. What are you thinking? There is no such thing as a stupid question, but you are really testing the limits of that rule with this one.

No, it wouldn't be. It's actually quite a chic menu item at swankier receptions, especially in New England.

No, it will be fine. Maybe provide another option in case some people don't like it or are allergic. It sounds good, though. Yummy!
