Surgery on your jaw

Surgery on the bones of the face (jaws, etc), normally in conjunction with orthodontics (braces) to move those bones such that your teeth (which are in those bones) meet in a normal relationship. This is normally done when the growth of the bones will not allow for its growth to be influenced by certain orthodontic appliances and when the desired result cannot be attained with just 'moving the teeth'. For example someone with a really small lower jaw might need orthognathic surgery to move that jaw to a more forward position.

There are risks with any medical/dental procedure that is done. You need to talk to your oral surgeon about the risks involved in the procedure that is to be performed. You need to, at the same time, discuss the benefits of the procedure.
