Yes, some species of roundworms (nematodes) can be transmitted to humans. Few are directly transmitted, but the pet may be shedding eggs in its feces which can then be transmitted to humans when they ingest contaminated material. (Children putting dirty hands in their mouths is the most common scenario.) The worms don't always act the same way in people that they do in animals; a common phenomenon is larval migrans, in which the worm larvae travel through the skin leaving a trail of inflammation. If concerned see your Dr.

Pin worm remedy (pyrantel) is often available OTC but this is not transmitted from pets. Raccoons also carry a very dangerous roundworm (Baylisascaris) so make sure to always wash up after handling animals or being outside.

If you are asking about ringworm, which is a skin condition, you can get it from direct contact with an infected pet, and it usually isn't too hard to treat. If you are asking about roundworms, which are intestinal parasites, that's far more serious. They have a specific migration pattern in a dog's body, but people don't taste quite the same, and they get confused. They usually end up in the eye or the brain, where regular dewormers won't kill them. Last I heard, about 500 kids will lose sight in one or both eyes IN AMERICA each year. Your kid's eye suddenly dilates, and with a bright light, you can see the larva squirming around inside the eye. Doctors are using lasers to try to kill them. If they end up in the brain, the symptoms depend on the part of the brain they go to. This in one place where an ounce of prevention is the best thing. Dogs should be on monthly heartworm preventives that also include intestinal dewormers, and should have stool tests done twice a year. Everyone should pick up after their dogs as soon as they defecate so the eggs won't have time to develop into infective larvae. Sandboxes should be covered so cats don't use them as litterboxes, and everyone should wash their hands thoroughly before eating, drinking, or smoking. I hope this answered your question!!

Yes, as Annie said, Roundworms are normally an intestinal parasite in dogs, they will migrate through the dogs liver and lungs before they go back into the intestines. People are not a normal host and they migrate all over the body looking for the right place, which in us doesn't exist. They will migrate through eyes and brains with very serious consequences.

There is no easy treatment for dog roundworms that have gotten into humans, so the best treatment is prevention with the sanitation recommendations made by several people:
1. pick up after your dog immediately
2. cover sand boxes so feral and local roaming cats don't use it as a litter box
3. wash hands immediately after handling dog or poo, and especially before eating or drinking. Insist on good hygiene in children.
4. don't let kids play in public park sandboxes... probably one big litter box

You can get RINGWORM from your dog. Ringworm is a fungus that manifests as a rash. It is a fungus similar to athlete's foot.

If you think your dog has it have your vet do a biopsy to be sure. Upon positive results your vet should give you some cream to treat it. You can also use over the counter fungicides (sp?) for athletes foot.

Bleach all the blankets that your dog comes into contact and with as well as all toys, furniture and food dishes. Wash your hands A LOT! Keep in mind, too, that you can spread this fungus yourself. Be conscious of washing your hands especially around babies and other people's pets.

You and your entire family could be subject to this annoying rash. Nip it in the butt before it spreads!

Good luck...

Good luck and remember...CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN.

EDIT>>Sorry, wrong worm. Yes, you can get ROUNDWORM. Read the links provided by other answers. Oops :)

People get roundworms from having direct contact with infected feces. A doctor should be able to tell you if there is recommended treatment/preventive medication.
