I am biased, but would say chemical engineering and industrial engineering are the best in terms of both money and working conditions -- and prospect for advancement. However, mechanical engineering is the most versatile and would be good for someone who doesn't know what they want to do, just knows they would be a good engineer or would enjoy engineering.

Chemical engineering is definitely one of the hardest majors, along with bioengineering, and wages reflect that. Industrial engineers work in business-related jobs, which means they can easily move out of engineering if desired.

Most people don't stay in process engineering (what many engineers go into) forever, and a chemical or industrial engineering degree will prove that you can think in a problem-solving fashion, that you're not just good at reading drawings as some other engineering majors prove.

There are probably a lot of jobs for civil engineers as well, but they pay considerably less.

Engineering is a guy friendly occupation. So if you were a male, the world is yours.

Money wise, civil or mechanical pays the most, and also have the most jobs.

Other maybe not as high paying but high in job satisfaction are aeronautical, computer engineering, electrical, offshore, consultancy military or defense engineering.

Unusual but still engineering jobs are bioengineering, which deals with tissues, and biomedical engineering, which creates , and maintains medical instrumentation in the medical fields of radiology, surgery, laboratory technology, and cardio-pulmonary care.

Most women engineers can be found in chemical engineering, and only a few can be found in the other fields.

Chemical engineers are always the most in demand and best paid by a few percentage points.

Then comes mechanical and electrical engineers on a even level. Work is usually plentiful

Civil engineers are much lower paid. Industrial engineers are at the bottom. They are hardly engineers.

You have to do what you like. I like engines and such so I'm a mechanical engineer. If you sit through chemistry and hate it then don't do it. I hated my more advanced electrical classes like Circuits. So I would never want to do it.

Depends primarily on your aptitude and what you want to do. Electronics, Computer Science engineers are in demand because of the booming service industry and boom in semiconductor manufacturing.

Mechanical, electrical and civil angineers always will find jobs, but the rise to a top paying position might be gradual and slow.

Aerospace, chemical, nuclear etc. are "niche" engineering fields, specializing in particular fields, and dont offer much in the way of versatility.

Finally it is your choice. do put your heart in it, and you will succeed irrespective of the branch.

There is no such a thing as "Best type of engineering." If I had to do it over, I would chose Physics with a minor in mechanical or electrical and I would go all the way up to my PhD.

Do what you like and what will keep you happy; and if these two factors are achieved, the money will follow. Do not use a profession based on money but on happiness!

I think civil engineers are considered the best in their possibilities of engineering they deal with such a vast range of things. But like all jobs, do what you enjoy, don't go for the money.

In general, electrical and civil are usually the easiest to find work in. Nuclear, chemical, and aerospace tend to be the highest paying, but it's not easy to get a job in those fields (especially aerospace).
