I recently bought a camcoder, and I would like the name of a program or anything else that will help me to break the video that I have taken into smaller chapters. I know I can do this as I record, but for events like a school play I dont want to stop recording for 1 sec and miss part of it. Additional information is that the camcoder I am using is a Sony DCR-DVD405.

Any video editing software will allow you to digitize your tape to your hard drive as any number of clips, where you specify the in and out points, and will further allow you to edit those clips, i.e. cut one clip into two, or delete a chunk out of the middle of a clip,or again join one or several clips together into a sequence. This is how we work on professional material, like television shows. You can also edit the audio separately from the picture, add sound effects, a narration, etc. If you have a PC, try the free AVID software available at avid.com (see link below). This is a very stripped down version of the program used by professional film editors. It would be fine for what you need, and did I mention it was free?

Macs come pre-installed with iMovie, which does all those things and integrates seamlessly with iDVD, allowing you to burn the resulting edited video to DVD. On a PC, you'll have to get another program to do this, like Roxio.

Hope this helps.
