How is a 1.8 gpa for college students? What grade letter does that correspond to? Is that an okay GPA or a really bad one? Please let me know!

From my student handbook:
"Good Standing
Good standing refers to the normal academic progress of students
who are not on probation or on academic dismissal. Grade point averages
required for good standing:
Hours of Credit GPA
Less than 30 1.6
30 to 59.9 1.9
60 or more 2.0"
I have 29 credits.

My college is VERY liberal. If our GPAs are below the minimums (see above) for 2 semesters, THEN (and only then) will our Financial aid be dropped. PLUS, we can drop/add classes up until the 10th week of classes. ALSO, I'm NOT paying for school, I got a free ride...I'm not stupid, I have had some family problems and other problems outside of school.

As has been pointed out many times in response to your question, the 1.8 GPA is equivalent to a D+.
That's not great.
However, the devil is in the details: what's weighing your GPA down is the F.
Otherwise, your 2 Bs look pretty good.
Try to not let the insults in response to your question get you down. Buckle down and get better grades. If you sense that you aren't going to be able to handle the number of credits (you said you took 17 the last term), then drop one of your classes during the drop/add period at the start of the term (beware, though, because those drop/add periods are usually only a couple of weeks during the beginning of the term).
The person who correctly wrote that if you maintain a GPA below 2, then your University/College may put you on academic probation is trying to point you in the right direction.
In my opinion, 17 credits is a lot for anyone. Perhaps consider taking fewer credits.

If the 1.8 GPA is based on the standard 4.0 grading scale, it's a very poor grade I'm afraid. That would correspond to an F, because it's a 45 out of 100 total points. You have to make at least a 2.5 to pass most college courses...

1.8 is a D+, but it is a bad GPA.
If you don't bring it up to at least a 2.0 by the end of the year, your university might just put you on academic probation. If it's not too late, try re taking some courses that you did poorly on. Your new grade will replace your old one, and your gpa will change significantly.

1being the worst and 4 being the best (1=D, 2=C, 3=B, 4=A) - 1.8 (D+) pretty much stinks! But there is hope! Cut back on the partying, stop cutting classes, after all you are paying for them (or someone with a vested interest in you is paying) so get your moneys worth out of them. Get your but in gear now that you all but killed off one bad semester and start getting what you go to college for - an education! You also need to be aware of Academic Probation - you need to find out at what GPA your college starts probation because you may be getting dangerously close to that point.

A GPA is computed by assigning each letter grade you've gotten a number. As are 4s, Bs 3s, Cs 2s, and Ds 1s. You then average them.
A 1.8 is pretty bad

That's what might be described as the equivalent to Cs and Ds, with 4 Cs for every D.
I hate to say it, but it's not very good, and will likely not be enough for clown college. Sorry to be harsh but it's the truth, and there's no point in hiding from the truth.
I'd recommend resorting to as much studying as possible, and as little of everything else. Maybe another school or something.
I wish you the best.

I don't know how to break this, but your grade is a D (very bad!). Not sure what happened to you this term, but I strongly urge you to go see a counselor at school. This may very well lead to academic probation and/or pulling of aid. If you need help w/your classes, most campuses have free tutoring. If it's just life, then the counselors can help with that as well.
Pulling for you!

No sorry thats a really bad GPA. a 2.0 would be a flat C so you've got a D there.

That is really bad. That's probably got some D's involved... My school requires undergrads to maintain a 2.0, which is a C average... If you follow below that, they put you academic probation... if you can't bring it up, you can be kicked out.
