first of all you should call it "line" not string.
It sounds like you have bought line that is too thick for your reel.
The diameter of your reel, or its circumference is probably too small
It is the thickness of the line which is probably causing the problem. Braid line that is 40lb test is quite thin and you can wind that onto just about anything without having the problem you have described

There are several things that could be causing your problem here.
1. Too much line on the reel.
2. Too stiff of line.
3. Too big of diameter of line for the reel.
4. Cheap line.
5. You put the line on backwards. (it makes a difference on how it comes off the spool for open face reels)

What type of reel are you using? If it is a spinning reel it sounds like you put to much line on it. Remove the excess line until you have about an 1/8 of an inch from the top of the spool and see if that helps. If it is not over filled and not a spinning reel did you keep the line tight as you reeled it onto your spool? If not that could cause it also. What type of line are you using? braided are mono? If you are using a braided line did you use a mono backer? are did you use electrical tape on the spool? Braided lines tend to slip and will not stay tight to the spool unless you properly secured them to the spool.

There should be about an 1/8" space between end of the line and the top of the spool on the reel. Don't spool it up all the way.

there is one of two things wrong with this situation, either you have too much line on your reel, or the anti dragg is off. if the reel itself is spinning then there is a small switch or button on the reel that you turn or push and the reel will lock up from going backwards. it the reel itself is not spinning then just take some line off, or quite a bit depending on how much you put on there, until it does like its suppose to. good luck.

you have to much line on the spool, cut about 20-40 yds of line off.

I have had this problem before, it usually results from overloading the reel with line.

I would use fishing line instead of string.
