Depends on how much responsibility that you want. Fish are pretty easy to take care of. If you do not mind cleaning up after something, you might consider a hamster or gerbil. If you want something a little harder to clean after you can get a guinea pig, my son had one and their cage needs to be kept clean or it will smell! A rabbit is probably like that too. You can also get a hermit crab, those are fun since you can buy cute shells. We have ferrets at our house, they are expensive to buy and have to spend time out of their cage to run around - they are not a pet everyone has time for. Does your family want a dog or cat? Those require much more effort and care. Just some ideas. Good luck!

If this is a first pet, here are my suggestions:

a betta fish would be great if you'd like a fish. They produce little waste, you don't need a large tank for them, and they can stand a bit of neglect better than most other fish. Stay away from goldfish - they produce 3 times more waste than any other kind of fish and poison themselves to death in a fishbowl while people wonder why they don't live long (they can actually live up to 25 years if properly cared for! but you would need a large aquarium or pond for that. Bettas usually live 2-3 years but CAN live up to 9 years.

something small and cuddly - go with a hamster. I do highly recommend rats but it is best for rats to be kept in pairs. On the other hand, Syrian Hamsters (the most popular kind - you get regulars, teddy bears and so on) are solitary and can bond very well to their humans but should NEVER be kept with other hamsters. Just be sure to get a young one.

Something bigger? go for a cat. Believe it or not, a cat is much easier and less demanding than a rabbit. Both need A LOT of exercise but a rabbit cannot be left out of a cage unsupervised unless your house is completely bunny-proofed. Both of these pets can get quite expensive and should be spayed and nuetured.

We have a dog, cat, fish, and a rat. The rat is my daughter's who is 9. They are very easy to take care of and actually very lovable. The cat is my 7 year olds and I help out in the care of him. The fish is my 3 year olds and all I do is clean the tank. The dog is by far the hardest to care for and requires much more attention. I suggest starting out with fish or a rodent of some sort.(rat, hamster, guinea pig). Research it on the net and find out which one would fit you best.

A cat can do! they mind their own business and take care of themselves. All you have to do is put food in their plate and they will love you forever. They don't use the floor as the bathroom, they go in the liter box. Also cats are so adorable, I personally think they make great pets and first pets!!!!

A kitty, all they need is a room to roam, a litter box, and a food and water dish and some lovin' from their owner. That's why kitties are the bomb!

If you're responsible, kind hearted, and have money for a vet if you need one, then any animal would be fine.
