Hello! My friends and I are travelling to New York for a holiday, and would like to get some advice on where to get the best food in Chinatown, bearing in mind that most of them are Chinese from China. Which restaurants would you recommend? Thanks a lot!

My favorites:
Fuleen Seafood, 11 Division Street (lunch prices are great )- portions are big and the shrimp dishes - ummm
Sunrise 27, 27 Division Street, I especially love their fried squid, but all the fish dishes are wonderful
NY Noodletown, 28 1/2 Bowery, small, drab, crowded - the food here is awesome
Shanghai Cuisine, 89 Bayard Street - really good Shanghai food
and three restaurants that are on the same block on the Bowery at Canal Street - I like all three, but I don't remember the names.
Have a wonderful time!

You've taken the most important step, which is bringing someone who speaks Chinese with you! I recommend having them ask around once you get there. Many of the mom-n-pop restaurants have their own specialties, so the "best food" will depend on what it is you want to eat. In my personal opinion, the best Chinese food isn't found in Chinatown at all, but at Mr K's in midtown. But a meal there will likely cost you 4x as much as a meal in Chinatown.
One more tip, if you're going to do shopping in Chinatown. The "fell off the truck" goods are not sitting out for all to see. You need to be obvious and vocal about what you are seeking, and if you see a young lady with an upscale bag on her arm, compliment her on it. She is there to point the tourists in the right direction. Just remember, always travel in pairs and no matter how convincing or real it looks, it is fake. Don't overpay! Having a Chinese negotiator will help here too.

My favorite place is the Sun Hop Shing Teahouse on Mott Street. They are above Hop Kee at 17 Mott Street.
But around the corner, on Bowery, there is a restaurant with a silvery facade that has some really good food. They have this razor clam dish that is out of this world.
There is also this little Malaysian restaurant that you have to really look for to find it. And when I say "little" I mean miniscule. There is just enough room for maybe three tables, the kitchen, and the cash register. They had a great Satay Beef when I was there last. Okay it was over 10 years ago, but if the place is still there, the food must still be good.

We always go to Mandarin Court at 61 Mott Street off Canal. The food is always excellent and inexpensive. A friend from China introduced us to it.
Also if you're going on a particularly cold day, go to 104 Mott Street to Bingo Seafood Restaurant for their Hot Pot or Shabu Shabu. You get two pots of simmering broth on your table and you pick your ingredients (meats fish and vegetables) from the salad bar like buffet and cook them in the broth. It's perfect for a cold New York day and it's cheap.
