I was going to do it a couple years ago, so I looked into it.
If you are doing fresh, someone knowledgeable can do it themselves, if it is being done vaginally. You would have to have ready access to both the male and female to use fresh. A friend of mine does it all the time.
Chilled and especially frozen has stringent handling procedures for the sperm to be viable. and would have to be handled by a Vet that is experienced in reproduction.
If the semen is to be injected through the abominal wall, of course a Vet would have to do it, but I had heard that method has the highest comception rate.
It was expensive, but certainly worth it if the male is right.
From what I remember -
Collection fee - $50 (or something like that)
Shipping, with container - $400
2 inseminations - $350
Not to mention stud fee.

My mom breeds dogs all of the time because we have show dogs. Basically you can use a certain bag that you put over the male dog's penis and then put that into a tube that you put into the female and that's about all you have to do. I'm sure that there's some websites that decribe it. You can use a vet and for a large dog it's a little under 1,000. You can first try to do it yourself then try the vet. And a hillbilly would definitely not be able to know what was going on!

So your dog has been genetically tested to prove she will not pass on problems common to the breed? She has won titles in work or show to prove she is up to breed standards? You have a breeding mentor? You have done lots and lots of research about the breeding of your b*tches breed? Or are you just aspiring to be a backyard breeder filling our shelters with yet more poorly bred dogs? I have no idea where to get a kit for that.

I've done it myself, it is easy once you know how but it's a good idea to have someone show you the first time. There is a possiblity of sending the tube the wrong way, or causing injury if using a sharp-edged tube (yes, people are dumb enough to do this....)

Truly, doing it yourself if possible is SOOO very easy!!!!! If you need the vet to do it, cost vary and it depends on what type you are doing....fresh, chilled,frozen...where is it coming from. Does it have to be shipped?? There are many factors. But if you have the bit ch and dog right there....couldn't be easier!!!!

I have never did it. I know that it is very expensive. And a vet needs to do the AI procdure. It hurts the dog alot so please dont do it.
