I seem to remember a NT passage in which Jesus stated that there is no need to swear an oath, because a person should be true to their word at all times. Doesn't that make the practice of swearing on a Bible for court or government appointment kind of silly?

That's a good point...and that is why many courts offer to let you "swear or affirm"....that's the way it's done in courts in Calif. just for that reason....many Christians refusing to "swear" on the Bible.

Here's the Scriptures you mean:

Again you have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You shall not make false vows, but shall fulfill your vows to the Lord.’ But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. But let you statement be ‘Yes, yes’, or ‘No, no’: and anything beyond these is of evil.; (Matthew 5:33-37)

But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath, but let your yes be yes and your no, no; so that you may not fall under judgment. (James 5:12)

Find me that passage and I will give you beach-front property in Arizona.

The general idea, though, is do not make promises you cannot keep and when you can't keep these promises, do not send people to God to make Him enforce a promise you had no business making. Promises like, "I swear by God (or as God is my witness) I will buy you a cow" when you do not have a cow and have no means and no intention of getting a cow are not good. God is not in the business of fulfilling foolish promises.

In court you swear to tell the truth. You should be able to do that as an honest person with a sense of integrity.

Dont worry. They may be taking oath. But did they ever told the truth in a court. very rare. What that lawer (lier) had trained them will happen in court.

Keep that Oath with Bible, so that 2 negatives make a positive and the oath and later lieng will not become a SIN.

I I agree that swearing on a bible is simply stupid. The word of God teaches us NOT to swear - to simply let our YES be yes and our NO be no. I hate to think of all the witnessess who swear to tell the "truth and nothing but the truth" and LIE their heart out. The whole system is out of wack if you ask me!

No. It's a public profession that you're going to tell the truth. It also forms the requirements to nail you if you perjure yourself. It's more of a legal ritual.

I agree. "Let your 'Yes' be 'yes' and let your 'no' be 'no'.
I think because we live among so many liars someone somewhere thought this might put the fear of God in some.
