I breed shepherds and have had an inquiry about sending one of my female pups to a "breeder" in Japan. I dont know much of how dogs are treated over there. I have heard they buy dogs for puppy mills and send then over to China.

There are customs to worry about, and alot of countries have very strict regulations regarding the bringing of animals from foreign countries.

I would say probably not. Only because you have no idea who your sending this dog too, and once sent you have no looking back because the deed has been done. If this puppy is sent and the person is up to no good, the person brought the dog, they own it, and if you decide they're unfit there is nothing in your control, you can do about it. When I got my dog's the kennel we got them from needed licenses, papers, and have checked (more than once, its routine) to see how the puppies life is, plus they needed 3+ contacts to make sure we qualified, that we did not hurt, harm, or possibly endanger any of our prior pets, and that we were fit owners who could provide a wonderful home for this animal. And stick to your gut feeling, if your a little shaky with the idea, theres a reason for it, and that reason is probably a good one.
Also I'm not sure how legal this is. Buying and selling animals to other countries, might cause a legal problem, and cause problems for the safety of the pet.

No. Find another home. Maybe they really are a breeder or they run a puppy mill or they want to eat the dog. There are a lot of sick people that eat dogs and cats over there. Trust me. Dont send that poor thing over there. She probably wouldnt even survive the flight.

dont send such a precious anmal to someone you dont even know about!!!!! it will be very stressful for the puppy and who knows if she would make it? who knows what the owner is like??/ maybe they just want her to fight or something and the fact that you put "breeder" in quotations answers the question for yourself. why send a wonderful shephard across the pacific to someone you dont wven know! just keep her and wit till someone locally wants to buy her! you will know if they are a good owner or not, what kind of home she will have, living space, ect. who knows she could end up as a guard dog, or living in a small cramed house, ect......dont so it please! give her to someone else locally so you really konw who they are. i would liek to take her if i could i think shephards are amazingly smart animals!

the breeder could be one of the breeders of a puppy mill =( i hate those places. you know how badly the dogs are treated in puppy mills right???? =\ ....not good at all.....no place for any animal. someone around your area will pop up and buy her in now time,

yes yes yes!! The japanese love their dogs and are so willing to spoil them and pamper them. There are all sorts of special boutiques there that make special gourmet foods etc. They even have special pet hotels where your pet has a private attendant and you can hire a mobile phone which you can use to dial in and you can actually watch your pet live. Do a web search for japan pet hotel. There will be a number of links come up. Unfortunately my internet explorer is crashing and I can't open any new pages otherwise I would copy a few links for you. You have nothing to fear. They aren't going to breed your dogs for food (food dogs are a different breed and I don't believe the japanese are that enthusiastic for eating dogs - more of a korean/chinese thing). Also japanese are very time poor and they don't tend to have many children so they tend to shower alot of love (and MONEY - they're a really wealthy nation) on their pets. I don't think you should worry about that at all. I think you should worry about your pet being shipped in cargo as there have been instances of death for pets in cargo holds.

the following is just a cut and paste I wrote in answer to someone else's question regarding shipping doggies in cargo holds of planes. There are multiple concerns and I'm not entirely convinced that it's safe. Since you're considering doing it, I thought I should share it with you - one loving pet owner to another.

I too have concerns about the length of the flight - particularly in the cargo hold. I don't know what size your dog is but I know some dogs are permitted in cabin on some airlines. So I've been trying to find out if any airlines will allow this for such a long trip. No success so far though. Having your dog in cabin with you is much less stressful than in the cargo hold. The other thing is that there are alot of dog deaths in cargo hold - at least on domestic american flights - you can get reports on the number.

http://airconsumer.ost.dot.gov/reports/a... This is the link to the reports that report on animal deaths whilst on planes in the cargo hold.

I'm not trying to scare you but alot of ppl just won't do it so I'm doing some serious soul searching as to whether or not its worth it or not, particularly as after my four years in the states, they'll have to come home and be in quarantine. It used to be worse though, quarantine in Australia used to be 90 days.

http://www.ajc.com/travel/content/travel... This is a link to an article regarding pet deaths in cargo holds. The worst offenders are continental and I think it was american airlines.

I would probably go qantas if I had to make the trip cause they're really reliable and they would be so busted nuts in Australia if they did stuff like that.

Don't do it. Any reputable breeder would not send one of their pups to another country for someone to start their own breeding.

I really wouldn't want to put a puppy through that long of a flight and then quarantine. I'd also be very suspicious of it being some sort of a scam.

Anyone who would be willing to put an impressionable puppy through that process isn't someone I'd consider selling one to.

If you have the slightest doubt about a potential puppy buyer's inquiry then DON'T send it! Be responsible and just say NO.

A huge breed policy that I respect, and that should be followed by everyone, is that the inquiring person must be local (that way, if the dog is ever unwanted, it can be returned to you), and you have to meet the person.

I would think that would be very traumatic for that long of a trip.

Also, some places require a quaratantine period following arrival.

If it were me, I would just apologize and tell them it's not in the animal's best interest.
