It happens when your feet sweat and you don't clean them in time. This gross gel forms and then hardens into little dingleberries. I've never gotten any myself, but an expert on the subject told me.

I've wondered that too. I think that it is either just a disgusting sweat/skin combo that forms between your toes OR it is when you ram the tip of your toe into something making you jump around because it hurts.
