Anything you buy in this price range is not going to make him happy. The sound quality will be awful and likely it will not have many features included. One thing to check for sure is how many inputs the receiver has. Many cheaper HTIB (home theater in a box) systems don't even have digital inputs, which would mean that it would be impossible to decode dolby digital or dts. If it does have a digital input (such as optical) than it may only have one, requiring some kind of external switching device. An all in one system for that price is not going to be satisfactory. You're better off just sticking with TV speakers.

JVC is about the best for the price range you're looking at.
Logitech is another good choice as well. However, don't
be misled by the "watts" hoopla, because that means not
a thing. When it says "1,000 watts" or "1,800 watts, really
it could only be totaled maximum peak watts, which in the
real world means only about 15 to 30 watts RMS per chan-
nel. Also, you cannot expect the sound quality to be much
more than fair-to-midland for less than $100 much less for
under $50 for a surround sound speaker system. And you
will need a receiver and a DVD player to make it all work
with your TV in virtually all cases.

I hope you are able to get what you wanted, and I hope he
appreciates the effort you have put into getting the best
available for the price you are willing to spend.

If that is your budget, you should probably just buy a stereo unit with detachable speakers from Walmart.

You might not have all the functionality of a high-quality HT system, but it'll be better than just tv speakers...

Good luck!

go for the onkyo .If you pull up total harmonic distortion of the Panasonic and Sony it`s 10% and the onkyo is only .9%. That should tell you alot. The sony`s look like the give you more bang for the buc but the lack quality.
