If he'd said something like "better than" Jesus", I would understand somewhat, but since when did "popularity" translate to one's value as a human being? Was Jesus really that concerned with where he stands in the hierarchy, like some kind of stereotypical high school jock? That incident make even less sense to me than the whole "Muhammad cartoon" thing, which at least has some basis in tradition and scripture...

Not only was his band more popular than Jesus, it was indeed better than Jesus, they never told anyone to eat them or worship them or accept them as their savior.

You are right , being "popular" is very different from "better" than Jesus. Of course, Christianity has survived over 2,000 years even though we still enjoy the Beatles almost 50 years now. Jesus seemed not to care one iota about "hierarchy"! If he had, I doubt if he would have had a longstanding legacy.

I am a christian and I'm not outraged by it...I think its hilarious cause the Beatles were very popular, that more like and have heard of them than Jesus...its like the whole American idol thing...more people voted for that than the presidential election...I like John Lennon, is as human as you and I and we all make mistakes they were only words not like he stared a war or something from it and he did apologize and all his songs are about love and peace...I see no big deal everyone gets offeneded over little things no one is pleased in this world

That was a drastic reaction from people who did not know the statistic count. The Beatles were popular among Christians, Muslims and other religious sects who do not know or do not believe in Jesus. They missed the point of the Beatles.

when i was young, my grandma (she's religious) told me that the lead singer of the beatles (i was young and knew nothing about the beatles) had said that and quite soon after he was killed.
she implied that god made that happen because of what he said, also disregarding that he died YEARS later

And how many YEARS AGO was this ?

It wasn't what Lennon said, it was his arrogant attitude that was so offensive.
