I'm with the person that comments on how people would get upset over this but openly welcome shock collars and all other sort of other truely cruel devices.
I wouldn't say it would be any more dangerous than peircing a human. Hell, I've seen a GOLDFISH peirced. Would I do it to my own dog? Probably not.

You can pierce a baby's ears, so why not a dog's?
(I think the people who do that to their kids are ridiculous, plus they're denying the kid the rite of passage of her first ear piercing, but whatever.)
However, would you pierce your own baby's ears at home with a giant needle and a potato? That's the important question.
First of all, you need a really, really sharp needle--not one of those sissy blunt embroidery needles--and a metal thimble. You need half a potato to catch the needle, and you need to duct-tape all your dog's feet together and muzzle her so she won't claw you, run away with the needle in her ear, or bite you. A beer for her before the operation might help.
Choose your location. It can't be near the end, or the earring would just get ripped out. It can't be deep into the ear, or you might hit a blood vessel. I suggest the front edge of her ear, near her head, in the skin just in front of the cartilage.
When you've decided, get one of those hypoallergenic first-piercing earrings--not just any earring--and use some hair clippers, and then a razor, to shave clean the spot you're going to pierce, so it's less likely to get infected and you'll be able to keep an eye on it. It'll probably stay bare until spring. Do both sides. Then get an ice cube an hold the dog's ear against it. Rub the piercing site and the needle down with rubbing alcohol, rest the ear against the potato, push the needle in firmly with your thimble, and you're half done.
Put the earring through the hole and fasten it securely. Keep a watchful eye on that piercing. Remember what it was like when you got your ears pierced, and all the things you were watching out for. Check it every day until it's completely healed, and even after that keep an eye on it, because there could be a dormant infection that could spring up on you. Be prepared to explain to your vet why your dog has a tiny hole clear through her ear, right in the middle of that painful infection.
If it all works out, you have a dog with an earring. Ta-da!

I saw a chihuahua at a tattoo studio that had it's ear pierced. I can't tell you how sorry I felt for that poor dog. Dog's ears have so many blood vessels running though them...it would bleed like crazy if you pierced it, and really hurt the dog. I honestly can't imagine that it would ever heal properly because the dog would constantly be scratching at it. And it would have to be a pretty thick gauge ring to not get ripped out. I think it's a recipe for disaster, not to mention extremely cruel...I really recommend you don't do this.

For the love of God, WHY OH WHY would anyone pierce their dogs ears??????????? A dog's ears have so many nerves running through them and are sensitive, that would be cruel!
Just to add, when you pierce anything you are ramming a needle through the ear and creating a hole - how could it NOT hurt? If you've veer had your ears pierced you know that it hurts initially to some degree then burns like the dickens for a few hours or better. Keeping it clean or not, it's inflicting pain for a non-sense reason. And I don't use electric fences or shock collars. I don't use ANYTHING that would be cruel to my dogs and cats!

I cannot imagine why anyone would do this. Of course it can be done, but it is not safe. It is also very painful for dogs because they have very sensitive ears. Having something in their ears would cause them a lifetime of torture. I understand that you aren't doing it, but the very idea is repugnant and cruel. Dogs are not accessories. They are a lifetime commitment. They are not fads, and therefore there is no reason I can think of why anyone would want to adorn a dog with something that would torture them for life. I also think that anyone who would do this should be arrested for animal cruelty.

That is sick! I've had dogs who got ear problems from shaking their heads and getting sores on the tips of the ears. imagine how easy it would be for a dog to catch any ear jewelry on a branch or table or anywhere and tear their ear! It's not like you can remind the dog to watch out or be careful.
What a cruel thing to do!

Your dog (if you have one) is probably like every other dog in the world. It will scratch at the ears or any other irritated site. Within moments the scratching will have ripped the earring out of the ear and will then need stitches. Is it worth it?

Yes it has been done but not safe because of two reasond: one dogs are proned to get ear infections and two if not cared for properly will cause the eardrum complications.

It is as safe as it is for you. Infection and bleeding are the two most adverse things that can happen. Personally, I wouldn't do it because piercing adornment to me is a personal choice and pets don't make decisions. Have a great holiday.
