This is a common tactic for a guy to find out what girls really see attractive in guys, thus trying to use this information on himself make himself to look good for his girlfriend.
You see, a heterosexual guy cannot see other guys as good looking. It is impossible, yet straight girls will openly say that another girl is pretty or cute.

He could be interested in you and wants to know if he is your type if its a celebrity. If its someone you both know he could just be jealous and wants to see if you like the other person. I wouldn't assume he was gay.
