My friend moved to a new place. Took her outdoor cat with her. Let the cat out. Neighbor cat came over. The two cats sat a few feet apart and stared at each other. No fighting, growling, hissing, just staring for a long time. A few days later her cat disappeared. She doesn't think it was run over or kidnapped because it was in a quiet cul de sac. She checked the shelter but her cat wasn't there. Her husband thinks her cat was killed by the neighbor cat because it was in the other cat's territory. She wants to know if she should have seen this as a sign that the other cat was dangerous.

A cat shouldn't be released outside, in a new area. They should be gradually introduced, on a harness, until you feel they have adjusted to the area as their new home.
Otherwise, it's very likely that her cat has started a journey back ''home'', which is where they used to live.

Your freind ought not to have let her cat out so soon in a new place. The cat should have been given time to adjust and accept the new place - indoors. I agree with the other response here - your freind's cat is trying to go back to the old place - the place it knows as "home." The presence of the other cat (neighbor) just re-inforced in your freind's cat that the ew place is someone else's territory. The neighbor's cat DID NOT kill your freind's cat. If there was a fight, your freind cold not have missed all the hissing, screaming , etc. Cat fights are notoriously NOISY.

Hopefully, your freind's cat will remember its primary care-giver and go back to the new place for food.

It would take a lot to miss cats fighting enough for one to die. Cats do NOT fight quietly. They are very loud with hissing, growling, thrashing, etc. If the other cat (or yours) was threatening the other, you would have heard deep chested growling and possibly a paw being lifted to show dominance. Your cat probably tried to find it's way or home or was outside and someone else took it in thinking it was a stray. Put up lost posters and see if you get any responses. Good luck.

If there was a threat, you would have heard hissing and growling. Or perhaps even flat-out yowling.

I think it's more likely that your friend's cat tried to go home to the old place.

It might be. But you never know. The cat could have wanted to live freely and ran away. Or the other cat could have killed this cat. But you cant be sure. I hope you find this useful
