ok this is hypothetical...Im JUST curious. Let's say a mother and father can't agree on a name for the child...does the mother get the final decision on what to put on the birth certificate? and also what if a few years after the child is born they relize that the person listed as the father on the birth certificate isn;t the real father...do they change it?

Well if you are married your husbands name could be put on the certificate without him signing it or agreeing on the name *trust me- I KNOW!!!.. ex. baby #1!!!

But the name can be changed later on if someone else is found to be the father and wanted "full rights". You have to go through the court system with a court ordered DNA test and such though first.

The father has to sign a paper saying he agrees that he is the father. Once he signs it, that's it.. he's on the birth certificate. They offer a paternity test BEFORE he signs.

If they do not decide on a name you can put baby girl xxx or baby boy xxx for a short period of time, consult your hospital.. some require a name before they leave the hospital. Both parents have to sign the birth certificate with the name on it... so if the dad didn't agree he can just not sign and not be on the birth certificate.

I never really thought of that.

I know that you have up to a year to change your babys name if you want, so I'm not sure if you need to come up with a name right then. I'm not a person who can name my child when I'm 2 months pregnant like many, I would need to look at the baby first. So I dont know why you shouldnt be able to have time.

In Ontario, Canada if both parents can not agree on a last name then the baby gets both last names hyphenated in alphabetical order. I can't remember what the rule is about the first name.

First of all changing the father on the birthcertificate has to be done in accordanace to your state law. Name your kid what ever you want. There is no unspoken rule about who gets to name it.

in michigan only ONE of you signs the birth certificate.. and if you arent sure if he really is the father-- you shouldnt put his name on there without a paternity test.
