Since she is quiet and goes to bed when you put her, why don;t you do that everytime she wakes up? Do not let her sit up for 3-4 hours to play in the middle of the night, without lights! So you see a pattern? Does she visit you every time she wakes up? If so, she just wanted to reassure in your presence. Its just normal . Try and be sweet at these times and let her know that you are not leaving her in the night...

Is your 3 year old taking long naps during the afternoon or watching tv before bed? I know that I limit my 3 year old triplets nap time. maybe a 30 minute nap (sometimes none, but then they get cranky) 30 min nap works best for me because they arent cranky but are ready for bathtime at 7, 20 min of tv, reading books and bed by 7:45-8. they sleep through the night.
TV before bed can mess up childrens sleep.
Try giving less nap time and see if that helps,
If not, maybe your child should just go to bed later?

It's pretty normal for toddlers to wake up a few hours after going to sleep if they are going to be too soon. She could just be lonesome, so she goes prowling for buddies. Pull her into bed with you next time and see if that's the problem. My 4 year old just doesn't like to sleep by herself, so she sleeps with my husband and I, or our 14 year old daughter. She will grow out of it though.

Give her time. She will grow out of it.. Maybe try getting her up earlier in the A.M. and short or no naps.

every time she gets out of bed, tell her to go back to bed and pick her up and bring her back to bed. this will continue until she realizes that she cannot win.
