I'm currently an enlisted sailor. If I have served for 2 years as an enlisted personnel before attending Naval Academy or ROTC, and since most of us would only spend 4 years to graduate, will my years of service in the military sum up to 6 years once I graduate?

From the ROTC guys that I've worked with, the time in the ROTC program only counts if you are under contract.

Example: If you are on Active Duty or Reserve as an enlisted sailor and were selected to go to the Naval Academy, you are put into Inactive Ready Reserve (IRR) status. You still accumulate time in service, and from the enlisted side you can still get promoted.

But, if you are not currently under contract, then the ROTC time does not count towards time in service.

If the individual joins the reserves, time in ROTC counts as reserve time. Time in a service academy normally counts as enlisted active duty.

All military schools, whether technical or academy require the individual to commit to so many moths after graduation, before they are allowed to start the school.

Since you're in the Navy, you can check it out with a simple call to your personnel office, but I suspect that after completing the US Navy Academy all Sailors have at least a four year commitment and this would go up if they go into additional training for a specialty.

For what it's worth, you'll make brownie points with the brass, just for asking this question to the right person, but please don't let on that your initial thought is that you'll get a free education as it's not going to happen. Good Luck!

Yes and no. It does not count towards your completion of 20 years. But it does count in calculating your retirement pay. So if you graduate and serve as an officer for 18 years, with your 2 years enlisted, you would get retirement pay as if you had served for 24.

At least that was the way it was 20 years ago.

Only the 2 years that you have served will count, not the 4 years
at the Academy.
