i.e. is an abbreviation for the Latin phrase "id est" which means "that is". It is frequently used to further expound upon a topic (i.e. to define what was just said).

You may be getting i.e. confused with e.g. which is an abbreviation for the Latin phrase "exempli gratia" which means "for example".

It means "id est" or "that is." If you want one that means "for example" use e.g. which means "exempli grata" translated "for the sake of example."
