i want to paint my front door with red paint but will the door take the paint since it been stained and finished? its an old door so the finish is kind of wearing off anyways.

you would have to sand it first otherwise the paint will scratch and chip more easily

I would suggest you sand the whole door then apply a primer before painting.
EDIT: Since the finish is wearing off it's important that you get rid of all the finish before painting. There are 'strippers' available at the DIY stores that will lift the old finish/paint so that you are starting with a fresh base. The sanding is important so that you will have a bubble/scratch/flake free surface. It sounds like a lot of work but it will be well worth the trouble for a long lasting finish that you won't have to re-do in a year or two.

Absolutely! You'll just have to prepare the door for the paint. Here's what to do:
1. Wash the door with liquid TSP to remove all grease, etc.
2. Scrape off any peeling paint.
3. Sand the whole door to make it easier for the paint to stick and even out the door.
4. Apply and oil-based primer. It doesn't have to be exterior paint.
5. Apply a latex-based exterior paint in the color of your choice.
6. Enjoy your new door.

I personally would stain them because the paint would peel off sooner then the stain would. Now I'm no house designer but I also think that the staining colors make the doors look shiney and glossy which is always fashionable and classy. Good Luck!

YES - first hand sand it with a medium sandpaper......don't miss any spots. Then , ask the guy at the hardware store about PRIMER . Applying primer on the door first usually makes the new paint stick better and last longer .

No, don't do it. Either lightly sand it and re-stain or strip it completely and then paint it. The first option is the easy way.
There is a third option, buy a new door.

yes you can,but you will almost have to use oil based paint because latex will peel and flake because of the oil content in the stain

I vote for skip the sanding and get a good primer. I prefer Zinnser
