Do you think that the words "anti-Semite" and "anti-Semitic" are misnomers that should be scrapped from the English language?

According to the Columbia Viking Desk Encyclopedia, Volume II, the term "Semite" was originally believed to be a descendant of Shem, son of Noah. However, today the term includes Arabs, Akkadians of ancient Babylon, Assyrians, Canaanites (Amorites, Moabites, Edomites, Ammonites and Phoenicians), Aramaean tribes (including Hebrews) and the large part of Ethiopians. They are all grouped as Semites because their languages stem from the common tongue of Semitic, a sub-family of the Afro-Asiatic language family. Their original home probably was Arabia, from which they spread to Mesopotamia, the eastern Mediterranean area and the Nile delta. The last group formed the basis of the new nation and religion associated with Judaism.

I used Osama bin Laden as an example because he is well-known and Arab, and has spoken publicly about Jews. I agree that the real nature of his character is a bit nebulous. After all, he has not been nicknamed "Osama bin London" for nothing, I am sure.

I think that irish_giant might benefit from looking up the word Zionism in a dictionary and reading up on the biography of Theodor Herzl.

It seems to me, by looking at the first five answers, that educators and journalists need to brush up .

My apololgies to bajricf for remark about the last five responses. Before I had a chance to go to the links I presumed it was one more article about saving people, without going into any of the deeper issues. These questions and answers about saving people and others going to Hell are too numerous on Yahoo! Answers, and have been posted by Christians and non-Christians alike.

I can see the articles are good ones on the Art & Craft that made America great, a cult of theft, where one country or culture gets to be "superior" by robbing their own and then plundering other countries.

I don't think it is only the Jews who are into this malice, however. George W. Bush ("mainstream American"?) seems to be a skilled performer at it.

They're not just anti-semitic, they're anti anything not Islamic.

It is very wrong to put Bin Laden and Mahmoud Abbas together in one group.Bin Ladin is insane, fanatical and clearly anti-Jewish, just like he is anti anyone who does not agree with him.
Abbas on the other hand is a person who is stuck in a bad situation, As far as i know, there is no blood on Mahmoud Abbas' hands. Even the Israelis like him to an extent. That is if the Israelis can like anyone.
I am really saddened by the level of ignorance here. Maybe Arabs have replaced Jews as the world's scapegoat now. Anti-Arabism, anti-Islamism or Islamophobia (whatever term you like) are clearly on the rise. I don't say Muslims are innocent of all the charges thrown against them, but this is really scary.
As for the person who said that Hitler coined the phrase zionism. Where the hell did you get that? What about the zionist conferences that took place even before Hitler was born? Where do some people get their information?
I am sick and tired of this link between the USA and Israel. Some people talk as if Israel is the 51st state. They talk as if Israel is this baby that should be sheltered from harm. How would the USA be hurt if Israel is gone?
So what if someone wants to wipe Israel off the map? Most Israelis would love to wipe all Arabs of the map and from what i've read, some of the people that have written here wouldn't mind killing off all Muslims.
What's the difference here? No one has the moral high ground.
As for the term anti-semitic, i also hate that one. It should be anti-Jewish, that is a better description of the intentions and feelings of those who hate Jews.
Is Islam anti-Jewish? Sure it is, just like Judaism is anti anything that is not Jewish. That's the problem with every religion, the only difference is that until recently, Jews were never powerful enough to comit violence of their own, but once they had a state, look at what they did.

In the 19th century much of Europe had abandoned Christianity. Thus, the old excuse for hating Jews ("they killed Jesus") didn't really make sense anymore.

But hatred of Jews was still strong as ever. This was a hot topic in Europe -- "the Jewish Question"

A German writer, Wilhelm Marr, created the term "anti-Semitic" to describe hatred of Jews in his time. He theorized that it was because Jews were a middle eastern people (Semites) that they were hated in Europe.

"Jew-hate" has gone through different appellations and different excuses over time. "Anti-Semitism" was just one, based on the theory that Jews are hated because of their "semitic ethnicity".

Today's excuse for hating Jews is the Arab-Israeli Conflict

Is a dog anti-canine or a cat anti-feline? The simple answer is that neither of the men in question is even capable of being anti-Semitic because Arabs are a SEMITIC people. They are just anti-oppression (i.e. ISRAEL).

I personally think that Bin Laden is a neocon sham and is still affiliated with the CIA, He has done nothing but lay the ground work for the war on the Middle East.......I mean terror, and he has brought hundreds of innocent people to their deaths with his image alone, but that point aside he is still Semitic and therefor anyone who opposes him is an anti-Semite.

OOPS!!! I guess I'm an anti-Semite too!!!!

(another self hating Semite!)

You're right about the misuse of anti-Semitic, we Assyrians are Semitic and have been persecuted, but those that have persecuted us are not referred to as anti-Semitic people (Assyrian Genocide). Other groups of people that are Semitic should be recognized as Semitic.

The National Prayer Network's "Truthtellers" Website is a unique resource center reflecting a truly biblical approach to Israel, the Jewish people, and to America's relationship with Israel. It endorses God's promise to bring redemption to a Jewish remnant at Christ's Second Coming

Uh, Yes, I would say that anyone who wants to destroy Israel and kill Jews is anti-Semetic. And I DO think that anti-Semetic and anti-Zionist are one in the same. In fact, Hitler coined the phrase, Zionist.
