My sister and I are very close to my aunt. She is my dad's sister. But, we have also known my uncle since we were little. They have been married for ten years with 3 kids. He recently cheated on her. We all found out that he has been with this other woman for over a year. It was devastating to our whole family. These kinds of things don't really happen in my family. They're trying to work it out and we're going to see them for the annual Christmas at my grandma's house. How do I act around my uncle? I am SOOOO angry with him, but I don't know how to hide it. What do I do?

Just act normally. Be polite to everyone and concentrate on enjoying yourself. You really don't know the whole story- nothing is ever as simple as it seems. In a way this really isn't your problem. Your uncle will be very uncomfortable at this shindig, trust me, and it is not your place to make it worse for him.

Especially if they are trying to work it out- any negativity coming from the family could make it impossible for them to reunite. Give granma a hug- eat a lot, spend time with your cousins and be thankful for all you have. Merry Christmas.

Ouch. Awkward situation. The good news is, you don't have to fake approval, or affection.

Bad news - no tantrum throwing or scenes. That wouldn't be kind for your aunt or anyone else there.

Do what he didn't do - think of your aunt's feelings and welfare first. If you try to show your support for her by cutting him and being unkind, or impolite to him, you'll actually hurt your aunt.

She has to work out her relationship with her husband, and how she does that is between her and him. First thing you have to remember is that this is about showing love and support, real love and support, for your aunt and your family. Second thing to remember is that your aunt's relationship with her husband isn't really any of your business, no matter how much you care.

What you do is try for "polite." Not "affectionate" or some bizarre act that pretends nothing ever happened. Think about school and work situations, where you often have to be polite and courteous to teachers, bosses, coworkers, etc. although you might not like them as people. Same thing here - you have to be polite to him for your aunt's sake.

So you don't offer your opinion about what he did (which nobody's asked for), and you don't offer little cutting remarks (trying to be rude but not obvious about it never works). Whatever you think about it, he's there, and your aunt decided to try to work out her marriage. Who knows if she can or not, but you don't make it any harder for her. You treat her husband politely, and when the effort gets to be too much, you grab your sister and go into another room to listen to music, or go for a walk, or whatever.

Then you come back, and behave politely, because you love your aunt. Good luck!

Do not, under any circumstances, use the annual Christmas party as a forum to express your anger. Be polite. You don't have to be very friendly.
I understand how you feel; I would feel the same.
It is his wife's decision whether to break up with him.
If his wife still wants him, you have to support her in this. Just be polite.
He may feel guilty about it, as he should. If so, it will not help for you to pound on him. And if he doesn't feel guilty, it certainly won't help.
