To me, that says two things, If you don't have something good to say about someone, keep your mouth shut. It also says we all have a full time job worrying about ourselves, so quit being busybodies.

This is highly relevant to modern day issues. Integrity and honesty is breaking down so much that it is showing through government propaganda despite the ready availability of mass media.
The leaders of the United States made claims against their neighbor Iraq that they had weapons of mass destruction, when this turns out to almost certainly not be true. Whether it was a deliberate lie or gross negligence is irrelevant for the purposes of integrity. The greater the accusation, the greater surety you should have that your accusations are correct.
The leaders of Palestine and Iran are putting forth falsified videos in which US, English, and Israeli forces are taking aim and killing their civilians. They are breeding hate based on false accusations.
When two neighbors of the world with great power and influence over their populace claim false witness against each other, the resulting hatred manifests itself in violence -- violence particularly shameful because it is based on misunderstanding. People are being hated for what they are not.
The power and potential danger of lies is severe, as evidenced in such a hatred of an alien culture and people that hasn't been seen on such a large scale and to such degree since Nazi Germany and the Crusades. Truth would alleviate many of these problems, and would take away much of the hatred that fuels today's violence.

Truthfulness is important for our own integrity, for trust and understanding among people, and for our loyalty to Christ as disciples. Think about it, what if everyone lied? There could not be any judicial systems, and humans would have to live in constant fear. This commandment is primarily intended to safeguard humankind and to preserve the value of Truth, which is Christ.
This message is an obvious challenge to today's culture and values. Today's culture is obsessed with "self-pleasure before all else." If that involves dishonesty, society doesn't really care. It's not totally hopeless, though. Society still appreciates truthfulness and honest people, while it doesn't really care about following those values itself. Just look around social groups and you will quickly see the ease with which people fall into the sins of over-exaggeration, gossip, and just plain lying.

Of course, the current world is filled with lies and deceit. We have gossip pages, columns and office politics, which are carried by those busy bodies. It is through such things at many people have skewered perceptions of people around them, like racism, religious conflicts and etc.
These, sadly, are among the most read topics, when people should be made more aware of serious events such as natural diasters, dieases and poverty conditions in 3rd world countries.
In a modern society that emphasizes the growth of one self, people often utilise information to sabotage others around them, so as to make themselves feel superior or to gain advantage.
They are missing out the need to grow as a community, not just local, but globally. How can we say man has advanced civilly, while we turn a blind eye to genocide happening elsewhere.

The Eighth Commandment is not being obeyed. It says: Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN ?
We should fear and love God so that we do not deceitfully belie, betray, backbie, nor slander our neighbor, but apologize for him, speak well of him, and put the most charitable construction on all that he does.
I would Love to see the other versions. Most of the Commandments are dis-obeyed. This is happening all over, many times a day. So sad.

In at number 8, this has become one of the "lesser" commandments. Because it lacks in the oomph of those that apply to worship, sex, or blind obedience. I think number 8 is in today's world more like a suggestion. Yes, religion evolves also.
In today's world, things move faster. Members of communities are not as reliant on one another, this does cause for less need to trust or to be trustworthy.

Why would you falsely accuse someone, or speak evil about them. Makes since not to do things like that. What about the sabbath commandment? The 4th commandment.

Why isn't this an important message for today's world. It's all relative. Jesus is the same now as before. Why would we change what He told us, simply because society is screwed up? It's challenging for one reason.
Sodom and Gomorrha had NOTHING on The United States of America.....and you see what happened there...

It is an important message because truth be told the world would be a better place if nobody lied. Bottom line is, nobody likes to be lied to. It is a challage because, now a days, everybody lies. And I mean EVERYBODY. Yup! Wether we admit it or not, we all do. Even if we try not to, not a single day passes without us saying at least a "little one".

(Matthew 24:12) And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
Simply PUT: As mankind gets more and more evil, the LESS PEOPLE WANT TO HEAR = THE TRUTH!
John 17:17 .... Thy WORD is Truth!
