I have suffered fro IBS for 20 +years.
Drug therapy is only used in severe cases of IBS and they all can have serious side effects (Lotronex) I have also been on Antidepressants and they have not helped my IBS in any way.
I found the best way to control it. (not cure it) is to eat small easy to digest meals throughout the day (6 meals instead of 3) I have learned that certain foods make it more severe and if I skip meals, and don't eat 1 day and then overeat the next. (LOOKOUT!!) The best way to live with IBS is to be consistent in your eating habits.

it depends on the patient everyone is diffrent no matter how many commercials for drugs you see - you should have a proper evaluation of your diet and your delayed hypersensitivity to the foods you eat. aslo if your spine is twisted and misaligned in the upper neck or lower mid back you could have nerve impingement syndrome causing the irritable bowel symptoms. go find a chiropractor who works with nutritional concerns or internal disorders - they are few and far between but i am sure you can find one online.

A big thing is to learn your triggers. Journal your symptoms...rating them every day and write down what you eat and if you were stressed.
Probiotics are a great treatment.

Good meds are antispasmodics. Peppermint is a good alternative that is an antispasmodic but if you want a drug hyoscyamine works.

I would try Zoloft. Most cases of IBS are caused by anxiety. When I started an antidepressant, most of my symptoms went away.
