The attack on the USS Liberty was a deliberate assault by the Israelis on a US flagged warship sailing in international waters.
The Israelis knew the Liberty was a US intelligence ship, and feared that the US would detect plans for their invasion of Syria. They were very obviously doing everything they could to sink the ship and in so doing, eliminate the evidence of who did it.
During the battle, radio traffic was recorded that clearly showed that the Israeli pilots knew it was an American ship. All records were ordered destroyed by the White House to cover up the attack. Eye witnesses of high credibility swore that they heard the damning communications between the Israeli pilots and their commanders
The "mistake" was no mistake at all. The US and the Israeli's hushed it up for fear of the bad press in a time of war. It was one of the most shameful acts the Israeli govt ever perpetrated on it's best and sometimes only ally.
To a man, everyone on board the USS Liberty insisted the Israeli's knew they were attacking a lightly armed US warship. The Israeli's only broke off the attack when a high ranking naval officer aboard a nearby US Aircraft Carrier radioed in the clear (an uncoded voice transmission) to responding US Naval aviators to shoot down anything flying around the Liberty. Only then did the Israelis break off the attack and retreat.
Shame knows no bounds here.
PS: Captain William L. McGonagle was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions that day to save the Liberty and her crew. In the ultimate insult, it was not the President of the United States who placed the nation's highest military award around his neck, but a Naval bureaucrat.

Depends on which USS Liberty you're talking about.
The first Liberty was a captured schooner that served in Lake Champlain during the American Revolutionary War.
The second Liberty (AGTR-5) was a Belmont-class technical research ship that was attacked and damaged by Israeli forces on June 8, 1967 (see the USS Liberty incident).
The second link gives you some of the excuses why this US spy ship was attacked. In case you don't realize it an intelligence vessel means a spy vessel.

The Israelis's (confirmed attackers) commited the attacks.
The USS Liberty was an intelligence ship collecting radio transmissions, coded messages, and monitoring military movements of Israel and Egypt.
The Israelis wanted to cover up the MASSACRES they were commiting on Egyptian POW's. Angry at the Egyptians, Israeli troops tortured and killed captured Egyptian troops. In doing so, they were VIOLATING Geneva Convention rules for prisoners of war. If Israel had been caught, it would faced UN sanctions and virtually economic trade blackout.
Knowing that the USS Liberty was nearby and afraid that it had caught the transmission ordering the killings, the Israelis mobilized aircraft and torpedo boats to destroy the USS Liberty. 34 Navy sailors died and 173 were wounded.
It is a long and controversial story. The link below should provide you with more detailed information.

The attack on USS Liberty was carried out by Israeli planes and torpedo boats resulting to many 34 US casualties. It was a big mistake on the part of Israel.

The Israelis did.
And they did this because the US Navy told then that there were no US ships within 100 miles of that location.
You see we ordered all US Navy ships to leave the area but the word never made it to the USS Liberty. Then the US commander assumed that all ships had gotten the word without verifying that this was in fact the case.
In other words - we screwed up.
