When your your dentist works on your teeth, he will sometimes use a special kind of a "tooth raincoat" called a rubber dam.

A rubber dam is made out of a stretchy, rubbery material.

To put a rubber dam on your tooth, your dentist first puts holes in it that match the teeth being worked on.

Your dentist places a special metal holder on your tooth. The rubber dam just slips on over the metal holder (it is called a dental clamp). A special frame is attached to hold the rubber dam tight and out of the way.

Once the rubber dam is in place, it keeps your tooth dry and prevents any debris from the procedure from falling to the back of your throat.

I am a Dental Assistant and it is a sqare piece of rubber that we punch holes in and than put on a metal frame and than we put a clamp around the patients tooth and than that holds the rubber dam in place so that the tooth stays dry when we are working on it. I work in pediatric dentistry, so not to scare the kids we call it a rain coat for their tooth and then they usually aren't so scared.

a large square rubber sheet. the dentist punctures a very small hole in it to fit it over the tooth using a clamp and attaches the outer edges to a frame. it is used mostly during root canal therapy to keep debris from the procedure from falling into the mouth and going down the throat.

It is something dentists use to prevent debris from going down your throat when they are drilling. It is a thin piece of stretchy rubber that they stretch over your teeth to hold in place.

I had to look it up. It's a makeshift dental dam made from a condom, from what I can tell.
