can you send a book to an inmate?

Yes. I worked in a bookstore and we did it all the time. It had to come from a bookstore address though. Just go to your local B&N, Borders, etc. and ask.

Some Jurisdictions do not allow Books into an institution, because it requires inspection for contraband, and requires a lot of additional man hours, when most institutions are under staffed already. Most all of them have a library and will usually allow an inmate to order the books they desire to read!!

Contact the prison or jail where the inmate currently resides. They will give you a list of does and don't. It is different with each facility.

Books can be sent to inmates but it must pass through the wardens if allowed.

My understanding is that the prison has certain bookstores that you can purchase books and then the bookstore mails it out . you are not allowed to send a book of any type new or used,you can't even mail them a magazine.

I don't see why it would be, but some countries make crazy laws. If the book could be considered pornographic, perhaps, or somehow anti-religious, then it might be confiscated. However - why don't you ask your friend who lives there? If someone knows, or can find out, it should be him.
