The Sony FD92 actually has 8x Optical Zoom according to a review I've read.

You'll definetly want more Optical Zoom as this won't affect your picture quality - whereas Digital Zoom will. It won't show up on the LCD screen, but you'll certainly see the difference on your computer or printing it out.

Also - the Sony FD92 is seriously old. At 1.6 Megapixals (MPs) I'd be looking elsewhere. You will not be able to do standard 4x6 photos with that resolution - unless you're primary goal is only small webphotos... Most mobile phones with cameras have 1.6MP cameras these days!

If you want to print 4x6 photos I'd suggest shopping for no less that 3MPs. Also keep in mind that more MPs will mean bigger photos - but not necessarily better quality. For quality you'll need to read different reviews or try the cameras out for yourself.

That usually means that the camera has 4x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom. Multiplying these two together brings a total of 16x zoom. This is a dodgy way to market a camera. All that matters is optical zoom. Forget all about digital zoom, it's the same as enlarging the photo on the computer later.

High end digital SLR cameras don't even have digital zoom. When you get your camera, go into the menu and turn digital zoom off.
