I work at a small cafe, we're not open on major holidays. I think that some places need to be open for business, like police officers, nurses, doctors and so on. working and living are part of life you take the good with the bad. You do what you have to do to survive and provide for you and your family. I mean it would be nice if everyone stayed at home on the holidays and didn't venture out till the next day, but it doesn't and probably will never work that way. people travel during the holidays, so that means more businesses have a need to be open so they can make a profit of them, so on and so on. that's life.

Another police/fire dispatcher here....sometimes working the holidays is a good excuse to NOT spend the day with my family, or to get out of parties I don't want to go to etc. Not even my close family members can keep my schedule straight between normal days, overtime, on-call time...and as a bonus holidays are double time not just time and a half!! I really don't mind working them at all. tho it sucks that usually it is hard to find something to eat if we don't bring food in for ourselves on a holiday.

I don't have to work on Christmas day, but I volunteered. I transcribe medical reports for a large hospital & hospitals don't take off on holidays, so I won't either. I will also be putting in some hours on New Year's Day, also. I will still have time with my family on those days. Hope you have a pleasant holiday.

I'm a cashier at a local pharmacy/grociery store and we are open on all holidays except christmas. But on holidays we are only opened until 6-8p.m. at the latest if that. On thanksgiving we were only open until 2pm.
It would be nice for people to not go out, but on some of the holidays, the only places that are open are mostly the grocery stores. People need to pick up that one item that they forgot. Its not that bad really, we get holiday pay for working.

I work with animals so I have to work every holiday to feed them. I only have to go in long enough to hurry through my work (a couple of hours) and I get paid double time for 8 hours plus 8 hrs holiday pay. I don't mind a bit!

I'm a police dispatcher, and police personnel have to work on ALL holidays, 365 days a year. To make matters worse, holidays tend to be alcohol-related festivities, and lots of fights and crimes ensue as a result. Remember this the next time you hear someone badmouthing the police!

I dont mind it...Some jobs cant be "closed" any day of the year! I take care of animals at a Vet hospital...even tho we are closed to the public on holidays, *someone* still has to be there to feed them and take care of them. I looove my job, so I dont mind one bit.
Also, my mother, my fiance's mother and sister are all nurses or CNA's so I am very used to celebrating holidays on other days.
Its no biggie. I have to have Chirstmas with my mom and sisters, then on another day with my Dad and brother, then on *another* day with my fiance's family. It matters more that you are all together then what the day says on the caldendar.

Somebody's cranky about her work hours lol. I wish that no one would have to work on holidays (except doctors and such). Everyone should just get what they need on the days before and close everything on the holidays.

I don't have to work on Christmas or Thanksgiving but I have to work on Christmas eve so I end up missing our tradtional present opening and stuff because my daughter doesn't want to wait till I get home or she's already asleep. I have to work on the summer holidays lilke memorial day, 4th july, etc so I miss out on the barbecues and tv marathons. It sucks because people go out and do their stuff then they come into the store and make a mess, not buying anything
