My relationship of eight months or so is dying on the vine. I hate to break up with him after the holiday season, and particularly after he just knit me a scarf for my birthday. And not to sound stupid, but I've already got his Christmas present and everything. Help?

Sit down and have an honest talk with him. It sucks that it's happening during the holidays, but it's better to nip it in the bud now then to let it drag on. Plus, once you've finally made up your mind to end the relationship, he be able to tell that somethings not right and he won't be happy either. Also, you never know, but he might be feeling the same way you are.
Don't let it drag on.

The holidays seem to cause all sorts of havoc on everyone life, I am going nuts myself,
Don't break up during the holidays and just hang in there for a bit, why not go to all the parties together and just slowly talk to your partner that how in the new year it would be great to really examine your lives and be honest about the fact that your relationship is not what it used to be. Tact and timing. I'm sure you can do it.

I've read, and I wish I remembered the link (damnit) that more breakups happen over the holidays than any other time. They think it might relate to some sort of psychological disposition. The authors went as far to say to wait until after the holidays to see if you still feel the same way. If by mid jan you still feel the same way, then do it. But you might not.
