For gods sake hold fire on the Bee's wax.
Use it for sealing but what you want is teak oil to put the nature back into the oak.
Add jacobian or antique oak dye to the oil to achieve incredable results.
No you needed to wire brush them off first, pay no attention to comments saying otherwise. They clearly never worked with an old property.

They are oak, right ? If they are oak and that old i would have thought you would have called then grey, not mellow. anyway, just use a wax or linseed oil, let them breath.
If they are pitch or yellow pine, them varnish them.
If you treally want to varnish the oak, then use a water based varnish, the oil based ones will not soak into the wood as its so old.

Beeswax would look much better - varnish tends to look artificial. Wax would keep the mellow glow on them too!

This company does a range of natural wood stains etc that don't contain harmful ingredients... would suggest the interior woodstain that is available in a range of colours.

I have seen wood oiled with a special oil that gives a really nice finish ,ask the advice at your local DIY store and they will be able to give you some options.

I would suggest bees wax, but try it on a hidden part of the beam to try it.
