Here's what I did in this same instance (after $300 in vet bills from wounds to my cats), I trapped the cat and took him in to get fixed. The humane society fixes feral males for 22 dollars here in California. When you get him back, he will be much more mellow, and things will probably get a lot better for your cats.

It's been a year, and now they all sit together in the yard!

You could take a hint from how the protesters are treated when they gather in Washington DC. The guards always bring out the big hose and spray down the crowd and if that doesn't work then they use a stick, when all else fails ,they bring out something to bring them down and cuff them, I think animals such as cats and dogs are treated more humanely because they don't really talk back ,but they do bark, bite and hiss and scratch allot. In short, a spray bottle of water or a garden hose will leave the same message for the Tom Cat; and any of his companions.

The only way to stop the tomcat from bothering your cats is to actually stay outside with your cats and every time he comes around you have to chase him away, you have to become the biggest cat yourself. Either that or you can't let your cats outside.
It's a shame when that happens, have you been able to discuss with the owner of the Tcat they might help, but I doubt it. I had to do this with my cats because the neigbour cat was a little nutty as well as territorial. They now get along, they're not buddied but they give each other lots of room. It's the only way to stop the tom from hurting your cats I had to do it for 3 weeks, I would only let my cats outside for about one half of an hour, but sure enough the tom would come around and then I would chase him away. It works but takes lots of time and patience on your part. Good luck to you.

Well my two cats were terrorised by a neighbourhood cat, it was horrible he was a real terror, you can by one of those electrical cat flaps which allow only the cat or cats that wear the special collar and will triger when your cats go in so they can run in the house without fear and the bully cat remains outside.

Or do it my way as my wife has a cat that looks like my cat but the only difference is her cat is the size of a baby lion cub weighing about 1stone about 3foot from head to tail a very big cat so one day we took him round to my house as per usual the bully cat comes and my wifes cat pounces on him and the have a huge fight but how can you fight a cat thats double your size in the end the bully cat limps out bleeding and very badly beaten, well lets just say that cat never came round again.

If this is a stray cat, I recommend you trap him with a live animal trap and take him to the shelter. It's best, also, to keep your cats inside and avoid all those dangers that lurk "out there."

I agree with everyone else's idea of keeping your cats indoors. Since the tomcat isn't yours, you have a very limited array of things you can do about it. So, the best bet, is to take care of the problem, by relocating YOUR cats.....to indoors.

Why don't you keep them in and open the window? My cats never complain about staying indoors and they can see all they want from the screen.

You really can't. You could just keep your cats inside, it's healthier and safer for them that way.
