I am trained to be in charge in all situations that I find myself in. This is out of necessity/safety and for survival. This said, I try to remain respectful and professional toward others at all times.
I will be the first to admit that there will be some officers that take this too far. Remember that police officers are a reflection of the population. If there is an average of 1 ***hole per 1000 people then you can expect to get at least that many in the police dept.
Most everyone I deal with in my job is generally in a bad mood or having a bad day. People call me for help when they are having problems, people see me when they are doing something wrong and are getting called on it. I would suggest that many people that say police are power tripping are peed off to begin with and that their perception may less than objective.

Some do, but most are are just doing there job. What I don't like is the feeling that they have that they know precisely what is going on in a particular situation without all the facts. I was involved in a situation awhile back where things were 180 degrees from what the cops thought and it cost me a lot of money ( that I really couldn't afford )to have the truth told and prove them wrong, and it was obvious they only had a small part of the story and they really didn't want to be bothered to get the rest, simply because they were convinced they knew what happened.
WRONG!!!

A Police officer is a job, however, civilians r part of their job's mechanics and like any other job there is probably a point where one tires of the mechanics of the job on a particular day. For the most part anyone that works w people has a spence if caring.

The authority given somebody, in spite of if as a police officer or of another workplace, can circulate a guy or woman to thinkings of self and purpose extra useful for human beings to no longer have. Many policemen or females may be tempted by making use of this "capacity" for years, yet many do come to words with actuality, information that this capacity isn't own, yet entrusted. many that do learn this become expert servants of society. We ought to understand that there have been, and shall stay those that abuse their reward, some, even police, grow to be the criminals. however the want for order is obvious, subsequently the want for a consultant police tension. i desire that officers of the regulation shop themselves in the bounds the regulation provides you, and don't abuse the have confidence given them.

some cops do it because they have the power to do so, but MOST cops don't have power trips. what you think are power trips are them doing their job. it's just different to you because you're not a cop. After what we see and do everyday, I think that after a couple of years it wears on you, and you become cold inside. you stop trusting everyone because 50% of the people we talk to, lie to us. Than once you're cold, you stop caring, not only about other people, but yourself. It's a hard job. Try to remember that when you think that the police are on 'power trips'.

Cause the younger ones get their ego's stroked with the badge and uniform and go a little bit nuts with their still surging hormones. Older policemen seem to handle situations better.

Because they can. It is like my oldest brother staying home and being in charge of all us kids while my parents were away. He thought that he could make us do the dishes, and laundry and cleaning, and he felt that he did not have to move a muscle. I think they are insecure in their own life, and need to use their power as a cop to feel better. Not all cops of course, but i have met a few *** hole ones.

The individuals you are talking about just can't handle authority, and should have been weened out by the psychological test which all recruits must undergo, but they somehow fell through the cracks.

actually it's usually the new guys that do that. They're so excited about having a badge and a gun and getting a little power that they sometimes go overboard. They calm down after a few months.

There are several reasons depending on the officer--sometimes just having control over another human being.
