Honestly, I wouldn't get her a dog for Christmas. I understand that you want to wow her with a dog, but it is really important for her to pick one out on her own. So here is what I would do.

Buy her some puppy supplies, like a kennel, a little collar, a book on Chihuahuas. This way she will know that you support her dog decision and you are planning to get the dog she wants. Include a little "coupon" for 1 puppy.

Then do some research together and find a good breeder in the area. With such a small dog that seems to be very popular, you want to be very careful you're not getting one from a puppy mill. This means do not go to a pet store! A responsible breeder ensures a healthier pup with lower chances of bad temprement issues. However, be prepared to pay a good sum for this pup.

Another option is a shelter. You can get a purebred pup for much cheaper than at a breeder, and they normally come with their intial shots and everything. Check http://www.petfinder.com

Involving her in the process of picking the dog is important. This gives her the oppurunity to visit a the litter and pick out the puppy that really connects with her!

Don't worry SO much about the Gift, Just make sure that Maltese will be able to handle it. I have 3 Chihuahuas and each time that I introduced them it took some time for them to be comfortable with each-other. Just make sure that you are financially read for two dogs. Good Luck!

I would first look up the malteese and see if it is compatible with other animals. Then you should look up online 'how to introduce a new pet to your household.' I had to do that when I got another cat. It was WWIII when I first brought him home.

I think dogs are always good for famlies. There were times we had as many as four. Of corse at the time we had a huge yard and house. To small ones should be fine even in an apartment.

It depends - what's your maltese's temperament like? Is he out-going? sociable? does he like dogs? If yes, then by all means, get a puppy. Be sure to introduce them correctly and you'll be just fine. Make sure the maltese is always first to be greeted, fed, petted, etc., as he's the only one used to being an only dog.

It all depends on how you socialize them. As long as you introduce them well, they'll be fine.
