Can someone summarize the Vietnam War for me?

I just need a quick summary, 10 lines or less, of the idea of it, and who won or at least what happened and why.

i have a report to do it and so I'll tell you this. it started with the french Indochina colonies. then soon, the Vietcong is created. then The US help south Vietnam. Vietnam used to be French Colony with an independence insurgency on-going until World War II when it fell into Japanese "control". When the Japanese were defeated a communist rebellion led by Ho Chih Minh resulted in a fight with French for independence and partition of the country into North and South and French withdrawal in 1954. In August of 1964, United States President Lyndon B. Johnson claimed that North Vietnamese forces had twice attacked American destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin. Johnson and other hawks wanted the communists out of Vietnam believing there could be a "domino effect", spreading communism throughout South East Asia if Vietnam fell completely. 10 years later after the death of 58,000 soldiers, the USA withdrew. Soon after, the country was reunited as a communist ruled nation. In 1986, the government turned to free market reforms. In 1995 relations with the USA were normalized.

This is a little bit longer than 10 lines, but this is what I have for you.

It was a conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam. The war began soon after the Geneva Conference provisionally divided (1954) Vietnam at 17° N lat. into the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) and the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). It escalated from a Vietnamese civil war into a limited international conflict in which the United States was deeply involved, and did not end, despite peace agreements in 1973, until North Vietnam's successful offensive in 1975 resulted in South Vietnam's collapse and the unification of Vietnam by the North.

We were there helping S Nam. The North attacked, and our troops helped defend the South, we started to send more and more troops there. Actually, it was never a war, but a police action; Congress nor the President ever declared war. And in the end, the North, South, and America signed a treay (Paris Peace Accords) which was a permanent ceasefire. Then the US left, and took their military bases w/ them. S Koreas economy crumbled (much like the Soviet Unions), having something to do w/ how the American bases were putting alot into there financial matters. Then the North came down and took control of the ruined South; AFTER America was gone.

Please don't quote me but this is what I think happened:
France went to Vietnam to help the South, they sucked so S Vietnam asked America to help, Australia followed suit. We were terribly unprepared. N Vietnamese soldiers fought a totally different way to our previous experience. They used women and children. Our troops were badly affected. They had to protect themselves so they were forced to shoot women and children. This played havoc with their minds. Terrible attrocities were committed by all. We pulled out because of public pressure. Don't forget, during the cold war, we were very very fearful of anything Communist (North Vietnam) we maybe should have done some more research before going in. My heart goes out to all affected. Do some research, it is a very interesting although tragic subject. Don't be fooled by the "Do gooders" who simplify this subject. Good Luck

Vietnam war- a war in Vietnam fought between North Vietnam, South Vietnam, and the USA. The North won because the first (and last) stupid Republican in the world, Richard Nixon, pulled out when we could've dropped a nuke on Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam!

French ****** over the Vietnamese. US up held treaty obligations. French pull out and yell at US for being there. US signs treaty with communist north to pull out troops in June 73. 75 Saigon falls because of South's corruptions and inability to fight.
