Why is that ? I play them in 16:9 format but still they get chopped off. Isnt wide screen TV supposed to play wide screen DVD's using full display (without black bars).

That's because their WIDESCREEN format is NOT 16:9 Format.... they're using something like 14:8 or 15:10.....THAT'S the downside of ANY movie....they used so many formats over the years for wide screen movies that hardly any are 16:9....

NOW HDTV.....THAT will always be 16:9 because the CAMERAS are 16:9.....it will always fit properly....

NOW true 16:9 movies will have a ratio of 1.78 to 1....that's the number you want to see....2.38:1 is way wide!

1.3:1 is actually the old NTSC 4:3 ratio....

This is because the wide screen movies were originally filmed in an aspect ratio wider than 16:9, or 1.78.1. When you buy DVDs that are presented in any format wider than 1.78.1 you will get the black bars on top and bottom of the screen. You want to try and buy DVDs that are shown in 1.78.1 aspect ratio. The higher you get the bigger the bars will be. The closer to 1.78.1 you get the smaller the bars will be. At the same time if you get a movie shown smaller than 1.78.1 the image will be stretched to fit the screen. I have seen a few in 1.66.1 or if you buy full screen DVDs they will be shown in 1.33. aspect ratio.

a real action picture lover is acquainted with that letter-boxing is a ought to. it truly is the in problem-free words way you spot each and every thing the director meant as he meant it. In an complete-exhibit action picture you're seeing what some nameless technician thinks you need to be seeing. this isn't a thanks to be certain a movie. Get letter-boxed and sit down in the route of the television once you need to.
