Believe it or not, some scientists say that certain marks on the skin of the Iceman, a mummified human body dating from about 3300 B.C., are tattoos.

So if this is true how can tattoos be a "fad"!

I agree with the styles of tattoos being a fad. But not tattoos in general.

Actually, a lot more than bikers and military had them. Try royalty, people in high society. I can see where some styles of it can be fad-ish, but overall, you cannot call something that has been around at least 5,000 years a fad.

Edit: I asked this same q, check out the article that best answer links to.

People fear what they do not understand. Tattoos have gone mainstream. The subject matter most are getting these days is a fad. Tribal, butterflies( although I will have one of those someday), Kanji, roses (though a classic) and, anything on the lower back. The art of tattooing has been around for thousands of years. It's not a passing fad. Mine are special to me and I am planning at least 5 more.

Well, you see, when people start using them for fashion rather than the traditional purposes....

If you have a tattoo of a butterfly smack dab in the small of your back, you have a faddy tat.

Likewise, a buffed-up bald white guy with a tribal tattoo around his arm also has a faddy tat.

Now, if you're a sailor, marine or a biker, your tattoos are not a fad: they're a uniform. Same goes if your medicine doctor and all your relations gathered around in a smokey hut as you went through a three day ceremony wherein you were pricked with inked bones....

Because everyone has them, and alot of people have the same idea, a tattoo is suppose to be unique and express who you are. How many guys have you seen with a tribal around thier bicep, or a tattoo or flower on a girl's lower back. It's not the tattoo itself thats a fad, but what the people get tattoo'ed on them....

because some people still refuse to believe that tattoos are beautiful and here to stay. there are styles of tattoos that are considered fads but i don't believe the art of tattoo is a fad either.

I think that tatoos were traditionally acquired by military people, bikers and longshoremen - rough and tough guys.

Today, every age group of men and women seems to be sporting a tatoo, that's why it's called a fad. Just like piercings, I bet that doesn't last forever.

Now it's not the tattoo itself that is the fad, it's the type or location of the tattoo that is the fad.

Examples:

Tribal tattoos--a fad turned bad
Tatoots on the lower back--slu.t stamp

They are a hot FAD right now because so many people are getting them--and they are more widely accepted.
I think their sudden popularity will fade in time--all fads do.
Then it will be back to soldiers, inmates, & bikers getting them

because tattoos aren't a fad! people just think whenever they see something they haven't seen before, that it's supposed to be a new thing that nobody's seen before.

because "most people" think to much. lol.. they think that everyones trying to be like everybody because now that so many people have it, it's like a fashion trend.. and really what they don't understand is that it's still unique.. it shows how many people really have something incommon it's not to look cool at least not for most of us.. I don't have a tattoo yet but I def. plan on getting on.. and I'm getting something meaningful.. to me.. I feel like my body is a canvas.. most people understand it as hurting your body.. but your discovering. your living and you don't know what's really right or wrong it's something that you like and you want.. and it still makes you unique..

"most people" think they know to much that's probably why I stop caring what other people think.. I wouldn't worry about it
