Honestly it is 1 box per cat plus an extra, so 6 would be great.

Each Cat Should Have There Own Cat Litter Box.

I have 2 cats and I have found that my apt. smells much better with 2 litter boxes than it did with 1. It still doesn't change the fact that you have to clean the boxes regularly. So I would go with at least 1 litter box per cat and I would get litter for multiple cats. Trust me there is a difference between the litter for a single cat household and a multiple cat household.

You should have one per cat plus an extra so six total. I hope you have a big place because that's alot of cat boxes around. I have three cats and two litter boxes because I live in a one bedroom apartment and I just don't want to smell one in my room so both are in the living room. They pee in one and poo in the other. I clean it once a day since I don't have a box for each. Sometimes they knead the carpet by the box trying to mark that its theirs. I wish I had a bigger place so I could have one more would be simpler.

"You should have at least as many litter boxes as you have cats. That way, none of them will ever be prevented from eliminating in the litter box because it's already occupied. You might also consider placing litter boxes in several locations around the house, so that no one cat can prevent the other cats from getting access. We also recommend that you place at least one litter box on each level of your house.

It's not possible to designate a personal litter box for each cat in your household, as cats may use any litter box that's available, and that means a cat may occasionally refuse to use a litter box after another cat has used it. In this case, all of the litter boxes will need to be kept extremely clean and additional boxes may be needed."--According to the Humane Society

I have one for each....I know it seems like a lot but you will see the benefit in the long run. I have a lot of cats - each with different likes and dis-likes. When one box isnt to their liking they have a lot of other choices. When one cat poops, but refuses to cover it up - the other cats have a choice and do not have to go in the same one. I actually have one that if the litter is not at the "correct" level(and by correct i mean "to his liking") - he refuses to use it, but moves onto another one. Also - they are so set in theri ways - some of them like to use the same one - no matter where when why or how. As they get older - just move it with them and they tend to not have any issues then.

I suggest at least 5. In different spots around the house.

I have three cats, each has their own litter tray. Mind you one does like to use all three. I clean them (scoop and refresh) once a day.

I am also fostering some kittens. There are three in one enclosure and they have a large (for them cos they are only 5 weeks old) litter box to share. This is cleaned every day.
I also have an older (7 weeks) foster who is in an enclosure by himself and he had his own litter tray.

Because I clean them out daily, there is very little smell. Also helps that two of my adult cats have covered trays.

The cats at the shelter have their own litter trays ( in their pens) but there are about 8 big trays around the cattery - they have the option to roam around the cattery free or stay in their pens during the day. All are cleaned and totally changed every day.

A good rule of thumb is one litter box per cat. I have two cats and two litter boxes, side by side, in the garage.

With so many cats, you might want to place your litter boxes in different places.

The most important thing, though, is to keep the litter boxes clean. Cats are, by nature, fastidiously clean animals, and they want to go in places that are clean. If the litter boxes aren't clean, the cats won't use them... and if they won't use the litter boxes, I would hate to imagine what kind of mess five cats would cause!!

Good luck with your kitties!!

Male cats don't share litter boxes very well, so one for every male cat and 1 or 2 extra.
