Interesting how so many people have the misconception that Christmas is actually Jesus's birthday. He was born when the "sheep were in the feilds" spring to summer- most speculate April. If you really want to celebrate his birth, you're going to do it right about the time he supposedly died as well.
The ORIGINS of Christmas have to do with older religions and their celebration of the winter solstice - the shortest daylight hours of the year. This, and many other aspects were adopted by the church to make the transition from old religious mindsets to the new and "improved" mindset easier.
Did you know that Christians are NOT supposed to put of christmas trees, because that is fully a pagan practice? Right there in your bible. Yet can you find a church without one this time of year?
Why do I celebrate Christmas? Because I make it secular and about the spirit of family, love and giving. Religion of any sort has nothing to do with me making a toy, buying a CD, decorating my home, spending time with family nad loved ones that are usually quite far removed from one another. While my traditions may have PAGAN roots, they've been adopted and adapted by my family for generations.
Much as the Christians did in adopting all the holidays they now celebrate and adding their god, demi god and saints into the mix to make them more palatable for them.

I don't celebrate Christmas. I attend family functions that are conducted by the Christain members of my family. I do that because I am tolerant of their beliefs even though they are different from mine. I, a Wiccan/Pagan, celebrate the Winter Solstice/Yule, which by the way is much older and what Christmas is based on.
The real question should be, why do people that do believe in Christ celebrate Christmas and yet choose to be ignorant of its roots?

I don't believe that Jesus was the son of god or the messiah, but I can celebrate the birthday of a man who talked about peace and tolerance.
I am not black, but I celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Moreover, the roots of Christmas are pagan in origin, and Christmas has been secularized enough that I have no problem celebrating my tuckus off.

First off, I do believe in Christ.
But for many people who do not... and for some who do... Christmas has become more of an American tradition than a religious holiday. I'm not saying that's the way it should or shouldn't be.
I know of some Christian denominations who do not celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday, as it goes against their beliefs. They do, however, celebrate it as an American tradition.

I celebrate Yule and Christmas. I'm Pagan, and both of those holidays come from Pagan cultures. All of the traditions of Christmas were once traditions of Pagan holidays on the same day... some with the same story of a child of god being born on that day. Personally, I don't follow any of the "child of god" religions, though I do like the story of Dionysus/Bacchus. He was supposedly born on Dec 25th... and was later crucified and rose to be with his Father... who was a God.
I just celebrate for the food and I get to pick on family members I don't get to see much. >_<

For the gifts and to celebrate the birth of Santa Clause. I love the reindeer's and the snowman song and the pretty colored lights and the after Christmas sales and being off from school for two weeks. Christmas should be around middle of January so we could enjoy it with snow here in KY.

Y not? I'll give you one thing its become a day of money and greed but its heart is in the right place. Christmas day should not be a day to give presents though. It takes away from how holy it is. I feel that the practice of giving gifts should be on 3 kings day which is a couple days after Christmas.

Christmas is a name assigned to a formerly pagan festival marking the winter solstice. The greens, feasting, and even much of the gift giving came from that. Tragically, our society is just returning Christmas to the paganism from which the festival was copied.
