I'm going to spend the day sitting quietly at the table with my cousins (the ones I like). When the crazy relatives talk to me, I'm going to treat them as if they're strangers- I'll be as polite as possible without being affectionate or "friendly". If they ask what's wrong, I'll just claim to be tired.

It works every year. :)

stay my @ss at home, pop some popcorn, start a fire in the fireplace and watch my favorite movies. Otherwise the only advise I can offer is keep it light, don't get into any family gossip and hang around with the kids. Kids always make the holidays a lot more fun.

Why would I be under ANY obligation to "handle" anyone at Christmas? This is holiday season for me too. Which means its mine to enjoy as well. If my relatives aren't enjoyable(which they aren't) then I don't see that I am under any obligation to entertain them.

I'll be hiding in my hole if you need anymore insight. thx

Well I moved across the country so I won't have to. I wish I did have to deal with them because I miss them. Be happy for the family you have whether they can be rather annoying or not. Hope that helps and Happy Holidays!!

Keep repeating the quote to myself
"this too shall pass." I then will inform my wife, the next time it is our turn to host the family holiday dinner, I will be in a resort, she can join me or not!

I was going to do it the same way I do every year, but I'm running out of space in the backyard.

Try to be as nice as possible, and dont talk to them if your scared of them! i know that sounds horrible, but if you dont feel comfortable around them, talk to other people you feel more comfortable with. I dont mean to leave the room when ever thay walk in... but just dont try to make conversation! and if they DO talk to you, just smile and be nice!

Don't invite them. Pretend your going out, that you are invited by a friend.
