Today, my brother gave me some t-shirts from his college book store. I'm shocked since me and my brother don't have a very close relationship and he's pretty much never given me anything. I remember that I had bitched about how he never brought stuff back from Indiana, but I had no clue that he'd actually bring something back.

My mother doesn't really regard him part of the family anymore. So, I don't think it's a good idea to tell her. But in the end she's going to get pissed and find out.

What should I do to resolve this very akward situation? Should I give him something back for christmas? ( My family doesn't celebrate christmas and we don't really give each other things.)

He is your brother.... he is part of your family and will always be. Do not take on your Mother's woes and ideas, make up your own mind about things.. Whether she gets upset is not important..... the idea he remembered what you said and acted on it is the main thing here.
Tell your Mom that he got you some shirts you had asked for... that is it.
You do not have to give him anything back, but a thank you card and a nice note might be appropriate.

What did you do to get kicked out of the family like that?! Give the guy a call, tell him you love him (as a family member, for all you sickos out there) and that you want to have a closer relationship than in the past. It's Christmas for god's sake!

How is this awkward? He's your brother, he got you a gift, it's only polite to give one back. Or at least a thank-you card. Or take him to dinner to say thanks.
