The only reason not to do it in person is if you're honestly afraid of their reaction... and I don't mean you aren't happy about them crying or something like that. If you think your bf or gf may physically hurt you, then keep yourself safe! Otherwise, your soon-to-be-ex deserves a face to face and a chance to discuss the issue (not to change your mind... just to understand what's happening and why).
